# Frequently asked questions

Straight answers to the questions we hear most from homeowners and businesses around Cincinnati.

## Scheduling

Do you offer emergency plumbing service?

Yes. You can call us 24/7 at 513-771-7588\. We respond as quickly as we can to urgent problems like leaks, burst pipes and backed-up drains.

What should I do if a pipe bursts or I have a major leak?

Shut off the main water valve first. It's usually where the water line enters the house, often in the basement near the meter. If water is near outlets or appliances, turn off power to that area, and turn off the water heater if the water is shut off for long. Then call us at 513-771-7588, day or night.

How do I request a quote?

Call us at 513-771-7588, email [info@schlueterplumbing.com](mailto:info@schlueterplumbing.com), or send a request through our [contact page](/contact/). Tell us what's happening and where you are, and we'll get back to you to talk it through and set up a time.

Which towns do you serve?

## Services

How do I know if my water heater needs repair or replacement?

Running out of hot water, rumbling or popping from the tank, rusty water, or a pilot that won't stay lit can often be fixed with a repair to a part like an element, thermostat or gas valve. Water leaking from the tank itself usually means the tank has failed and needs to be replaced. Age matters too, because a tank heater past about 10 years is often worth replacing rather than repairing. We handle both [water heater repair and installation](/services/water-heaters/).

Why does my drain keep clogging?

Kitchen drains usually clog from grease and food scraps. Bathroom drains usually clog from hair and soap buildup. Wipes and other things flushed down the toilet are a common cause of toilet clogs. If several drains back up at once, or the clog keeps coming back after it's cleared, the problem may be in the main line, and a [sewer camera inspection](/services/sewer-camera-inspection/) shows what's going on. Our [drain cleaning](/services/drain-cleaning/) service covers both.

Do you handle sewer line problems and backups?

Yes. We run camera inspections to find where a sewer line is broken, blocked or full of roots, and then we repair or replace the line. Where it fits the job, we use trenchless repair, which means less digging in your yard. You can read more about our [sewer line repair](/services/sewer-line-repair/) work.

Why does my sump pump run constantly, or not at all?

A pump that runs nonstop may be keeping up with a high water table after heavy rain, or it may have a stuck float switch, a failed check valve letting water flow back into the pit, or a pump that's too small for the job. A pump that won't run at all often has a tripped breaker, a stuck float or a burned-out motor. You can test it by slowly pouring a bucket of water into the pit. If it doesn't kick on, call us about [sump pump service](/services/sump-pumps/).
